The difference between assault rifle and battle rifle is that an AR (Not to be mistaken with the AR series by Armalite) fires intermediate cartridges which have less power, but are lighter and smaller which means you can carry more. A battle rifle (and AKs) fire full size cartridges which while they have more power and can shoot a bullet further, can't carry as many for the same weight.
